Many terms we use every day actually derive from racist, biased, or offensive origins.

For example, did you know that the term “nitty-gritty” originates from slave traders referring to lice and grit remains at the bottom of transport ships? Or the term "master", which we often use at work to refer to a hero version of something, originates from times of slavery and the ownership of peoples. Even the casual "long time no see" actually originates from mocking the language and speech of Chinese people and Native Americans.

Once we found out the troubling history of such terms, we never wanted to use them again.
So VCCP Sydney & Bernadette set out to rewrite these wrongs -- and today we are proud to introduce Respect. A free Google Chrome plug-in we have created together to help make your writing more inclusive.

When you write with Respect, it highlights problematic terms in your emails before you send them, explains the origin of the terms, and provides a suitable synonym.

visit www.writewithrespect.com , download the extension and start writing with Respect.
